Weather Planning at a Glance
The Best Free Forecasts
- NWS point forecast: the National Weather Service gives a seven-day forecast for any spot. Use the point forecast for the Merrimack River entrance, at the south end of the reservation.
- NWS Boston/Norton office: the forecast office page has warnings, the coastal flood outlook and the marine forecasts for the waters off the North Shore.
- Tides: NOAA's predictions for the river entrance are on our tides page.
Weather and the Season
- Swimming: DCR's designated swimming areas opened on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend in 2026 and the season ran to Labor Day. See the beach.
- Parking fees: DCR charges for day parking from May 23 to October 12, so a sunny weekday in late October costs nothing to park. See hours and fees.
- Camping: the 2026 campground was open through November 28, but water was shut off from October 19. Fall nights by the ocean get cold; pack for it. See camping.

Weather Safety at the Beach
- Thunderstorms: leave the water and the beach when you hear thunder; there is no shelter on open sand.
- Rip currents: wind and surf raise the risk. The Salisbury Beach Partnership warns swimmers to watch for rip currents and rough undertow.
- The jetty in rough weather: waves wash over the stone jetty at the river mouth; stay off it. See the jetty.
- Wind and boats: check the marine forecast before launching from the boat ramps; the river entrance gets rough when wind opposes the tide.
What to Pack
Sunscreen, water and a layer for the evening. A beach umbrella helps; DCR lists no rentals. If you're staying for the concerts or fireworks at the beach center, bring a jacket: summer nights on the water cool off quickly.
